In May of 1970, Sam Rotman had just completed his sophomore year as a student
at the Juilliard School. That summer, at the invitation of Mr. Jacob Lateiner, his
piano professor at Juilliard, Mr. Rotman spent the entire summer in Paris  studying,
practicing, and taking lessons.  That summer had a profound effect upon Mr. Rotman.
He became completely immersed in the culture, language, and psyche of France and
the French people. The museums, gardens, and cathedrals that he visited throughout
France enhanced his appreciation of and affinity for the music of Debussy and the
Impressionistic movement. We are pleased to release this recording of  the piano music
of  Claude Debussy.
Mr. Rotman’s CD of the piano music of Debussy has been selected to be played as
background music while patrons tour the house and museum of the Claude Debussy
Birth House and Museum in Saint  Germain – en- Laye, a suburb of Paris.

Modest Mussorgsky wrote Pictures at an Exhibition after attending a  memorial  exhibit
for his friend, artist Victor Hartmann. It took place in February 1874 at the  exhibition gallery
of St. Petersburg Architectural Association. Mussorgsky had such a moving experience
as he walked  through the exhibition that 20 days later he  had completed one of the
greatest works for the keyboard, Pictures at an Exhibition.  Sergei Rachmaninoff was
one of the 20th Century’s greatest pianist and composers. Rachmaninoff, who possessed
enormous hands and had a great command of the keyboard, was able to create some
marvelous  sounds from the keyboard. The six selections on this recording demonstrate
a wide range of colors and moods that are unmistakably Russian.

Although I had played numerous works of Beethoven as a teenager, I wasn’t until I began my studies at the Juilliard School with Jacob Lateiner,  the renowned pianist and Beethoven scholar, that I began to realize the  genius and power of his music. The year was 1969 and I was 18 years old.

The following year the world was to celebrate the Bi-Centennial of Beethoven’s birth. (1770-1970) As Beethoven’s music began to take hold of me, I decided to methodically listen to every one of his works, following along with the musical score. This had such an effect on me that I performed two all­ Beethoven concerts on December 15 and December 16, 1970 (Beethoven’s 200th birthday)  as part of the cele- bration. Following the success of those con­certs I was asked  by the Public Broadcasting Corporation to present a lecture-concert of Beethoven’s most profound piano work, Sonata No. 32,  Op. II I.

In 1973, I was invited to participate in the 4th International Beethoven Piano Competition in Vienna, Austria. 70 contestants from around the world performed the works of Beethoven before a prestigious jury of musicians from 10 countries.

After a month of competition, I became a Laureate Winner.  I have continued to perform the piano works of Beethoven including concerti, the Choral Fantasy, Op. 80, sonatas, variations, bagatelles, rondos, various character works and the Triple Concerto, Op. 56 in collaboration with John Sharp, principal cellist and David Taylor, associate concert- master, both members of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra.

Like the giftedness of so many prodigies, the musical gifts of accomplished classical pianist Sam Rotman were recognized at a young age. Sam’s playing was a delight to his Jewish parents. They encouraged him in his formal training at the Juilliard School in New York City, where he received his Bachelor and Master degrees. Mr. Rotman performs concerts worldwide and has participated in prestigious competitions including the International Beethoven Piano Competition in Vienna and the International Tchaikovsky Piano Competition in Moscow.

In this short program, Sam Rotman demonstrates his musical talent and weaves the story of his spiritual journey from the traditions of an Eastern European Jewish family to faith in Y’shua (Jesus) as his Messiah. Excerpts from Schubert Improptus, Beethoven Variations, Debussy Preludes, Mussorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition, and Rachmaninoff Preludes were filmed during a live performance.
